O Bilal, tell me which of your deeds in Islam you have done with the most hope of reward, for I heard the sound of your footsteps in Paradise last night.

The story of Bilal ibn Rabah

Bilal ibn Rabah, may Allah be pleased with him, was an enslaved African man in Makkah and one of the earliest people to believe in the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. When his master discovered his faith, Bilal was tortured to make him give it up — yet under the harshest treatment he answered only with one word: “Ahad, Ahad” — “One, One” — affirming that Allah is one.

His steadfastness moved Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, to buy his freedom. Bilal went on to become one of the most beloved companions of the Prophet, and was chosen as the first muezzin of Islam — the one who called the believers to prayer with his beautiful, powerful voice.

Bilal’s story, drawn from the life of the Prophet and his companions, shows children that true worth is measured by faith and character, not by status or where you come from — and that one steadfast heart can be honoured forever.
